Coenzyme Q10 (also called CoQ10, Q10 or ubiquinone) is a vitamin-like substance produced by the human body, and is billions of years old. Therefore, it is an essential element for our cellular energy: it was there from the beginning and regulates cellular (aerobic) energy via ATP in our mitochondria (our energy factories). In this way, coenz Q10 has an influence on as many as 21,787 genes! For that reason, coenz Q10 is used as the way to keep your energy up to par via support of mitochondrial activity.
Q10 is also an 'antioxidant': a substance that prevents oxidation and thus the formation of free radicals in our body. Free radicals are aggressive, harmful substances that can help lead to disease and cancer, for example. Q10 might also generally promote resistance and have an impact on inflammation.
You also often see it as an additive in beauty products (just look at all the day creams you can buy). This too has a reason! As we saw, coenz Q10 is an important antioxidant. When free radicals and toxins accumulate under the skin (due to the wrong cosmetics, air pollution, poor diet, etc,...) the skin starts to weaken and age faster. This is due in part to AGEs: Advanced Glycation End Products: toxic end products created by a fusion between glucose and proteins when there is too much oxidation. Proteins start to saccharify in our cells, as it were, and thus cause inflammation, cell ageing and rigidity or hardening of the skin. Everyone ages, but AGEs accelerate the normal ageing process. So antioxidant supplementation is needed, and not just externally via creams! This Q10 must come from within and be in our cells!
Under certain circumstances (recovery from illness, obesity, stress situations, medication use, inadequate diet), the body's own synthesis of coenzyme Q10 may be insufficient to cover existing needs. From the age of 40, conversion to the active form of Q10 (ubiquinol) also decreases. And the influence of diet on coenzyme Q10 status also appears to be minimal. Hence, coenzyme Q10 is considered an (semi-)essential nutrient that is best supplemented through supplements.
